ABSTRACT
As computer graphics technology becomes more affordable and available it will become more widely used in various areas of the "Graphics Arts" industry. These include textile manufacture, printing, photography, interior design, television and film animation as well as the fine arts. Systems will be used for both design and production.
Those who will be asked to use these systems - the artists and designers - have not traditionally been trained in the technical areas that are important to working with computers. It is now a problem finding people with both technical and artistic training. This has slowed the acceptance of computer graphics technology in these areas.
During 1982, we have developed a Computer Graphics Teaching Laboratory and a Computer Graphics Curriculum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. "Computer Graphics Literacy" is now a required part of the training for all "Art and Design" students. The course consists of computer aided instruction, lectures and "hands-on" experience with computer graphic systems.
The goals of the course are to elimate any "computer phobia" that the students might have and to give them the conceptual training so that they may become more than mere buttonpushers.
