UNITED STATES PATENT

TITLE: Method for Converting Black & White Footage
PATENT NUMBER: 4,606,625
INVENTOR: David M. Geshwind
ISSUE DATE: August 19, 1986

 ABSTRACT

Basic techniques are disclosed which permit Film Colorization services to be performed with increased quality and speed, and reduced cost. These include reducing the resolution and, therefore, bandwidth required for the color signal in the spatial, temporal and color-space domains. In additional, interpolative processes are used to prevent perceptual anomolies from developing. The collaboration between the computer and human operator is redesigned so that each does what it is best suited for: the human making critical judgements; the computer performing repetative tasks quickly and precisely. The increased performance achieved thereby, reduces costs by at least a factor of four. The process is commercially available under the name ChromaSynthesis. Advanced technology is covered in a follow-up US Patent #5,050,984.
